Riverside and Encampment are closely related, but Riverside came first, in the form of a ranch headquarters for the Swan Land and Cattle Company. The Swan brother established regular mail service in 1881, built a school and opened a general store. They called the town Swan. Before the Swans had settled in the area, Newton Doggett and his brothers had established a weigh station about where the Mangy Moose Saloon is now located. The Swan site was sold to the Doggetts and as time went on, the weight station developed into a settlement organized by the Doggett Townsite Company. The name of Doggett was changed to Riverside in August of 1902 because it had become a hit by some people in the area t refer to the town as "dogtown". Located on the Encampment River, Riverside has a unique charm. With their small population, you will enjoy the friendly atmosphere. Be sure to check the calendar for the many great events and happenings!
