Snowy Range and Sierra Madre Mountains offer 44 hiking
trails for the novice and experienced hiker. The trails vary from .2 miles to
45.9 miles and range
from easy to difficult.
Most hiking trails are above 8,000 so we encourage you to
dress appropriately.
The Snowy Range and Sierra Madre Recreation Guide
recommends the following for back country hiking:
-
Map and Compass
-
Flashlight
-
Extra food and clothes
-
Water Bottles
-
Sunglasses and sunscreen
-
first aid kit
-
pocket knife
-
waterproof matches
-
whistle
-
insect repellant
We also recommend that you let someone know what trail you
are planning to take and when you plan to return. The weather changes very fast
and can hamper your trip. The Forest Service has detailed maps and the trails
are marked by the Forest Service. We recommend that you contact them when
planning your hiking trip. We recommend that you plan to be off of the mountain
trails by 3:00 pm when weather conditions are unfavorable.
When you are caught in unfavorable conditions and there is lightening do not
stand by a tree. You need to get as low as possible as lightening strikes the
highest point. You should always leave summits and ridges if thunder is heard
in the distance. Don't assume that you have plenty of time to reduce your
altitude. Leave the high altitude immediately even if you think the thunder is
several miles away. The sound of distant thunder can fool you at high altitudes
and the probability of a lightening strike is high once thunder is heard.
Hiking in the mountains allows you see things that you can't see from a car!
Biking
The Continental Divide Trail is unique to the Sierra Madre Range. It is
part of the 2500 mile Great Divide Mountain Bike Route that follows the
Continental Divide from the Canadian border to Mexico. This trail climbs above
10,000 feet with some of the best vistas of Carbon County. Many historical
building, remnants of the mining era, offer extra excitement. The trail can be
accessed from the north near the historic town of Battle via Hwy 70. (this
