2008 Schedule of Events January 19-20, 2008 25th Annual Saratoga Lake Ice Fishing Derby The ice fishing derby attracts ice anglers from several states to Saratoga Lake hoping to make “the catch of the day” and of the derby for prizes, including $2,000 prize package for the largest game fish caught during the derby and gift certificates for the largest fish caught each hour. The weekend (always the third in January) includes a special Small Fry Derby for children under 14 years of age. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. (307) 326-8855. Registration until 8 p.m. on Friday at the Chamber office in the Community Center, or from 6 to 7 a.m. at the lake. Retailers that sell fishing licenses also have the registration forms and will be available until Friday night for registration. February 8-10, 2008 Sierra Madre Winter Carnival Come enjoy winter fun in Encampment and Riverside, WY! Activities scheduled as follows: Friday at 6 p.m. the Mountain Market will hold a Chamber social offering drinks and appetizers. Following the social you will receive a clue for the treasure hunt. This clue will help you find your supper! Saturday will offer the "make your own" sled race, and the kid's sledding races. During these events the VFW is sponsoring a chili/cocoa lunch in the Presbyterian Church meeting hall. Saturday also offers the snow sculpture contest across from the Mountain Market in the empty lot. Cash prizes will be awarded. Sunday is the 2nd Street Sprint with snow mobilers racing down 2nd Street, their speed will be measured by the mobile speed detector. Winners will be given a citation for speeding :) The cocoa cookoff will also be held on Sunday. Erickson Memorial Chariot Races Held every Presidents’ Day Weekend, the Chariot Races are one of the more exciting events in Saratoga. It is a joint event sponsored by the Saratoga Lions Club and the local chamber of commerce. The races feature two-horse teams pulling chariots at top speed down a quarter-mile track. Scheduled activities include: Friday at 6 pm there will be a racer reception at The Wolf Hotel. The calcutta begins at 8 pm at the Wolf Hotel. Saturday at noon another Calcutta will be held at the track. Post time is at 1 p.m. At 6 pm cocktail hour will be held at the Platte Valley Community Center with the banquet starting at 7 pm. Another Calcutta will be held after dinner. Sunday is the next race, with post time at 11 a.m. Get ready for hooves and hearts to pound!. (307) 326-8855 June 6-8, 2008 Platte Valley Festival of the Birds (7th annual) This event (held the weekend after Memorial Day) will offer a variety of opportunities to observe and learn the bird species dwelling in riparian, woodland, and wetland habitats within reach of Saratoga and Encampment. As a special bonus, a dinner banquet, and guided bird watching are available. For more info, call @ (307) 326-8073. Wings Over Carbon County. June 14-15, 2008 48th Annual Woodchoppers Jamboree and Rodeo The chips fly during the Father's Day weekend in June every year in Encampment as loggers come from all over the country to compete for the title of Rocky Mountain Champion Lumberjack. Using power saws, axes and hand saws, the men and women competitors cut down “trees,” chop logs and saw squared wood blocks in half, racing the clock for the fastest time. Cowboys ride bulls and broncs, and the melodrama encourages the audience to get involved. This unique Wyoming event assures a good time to be had by all. July 4, 2008 Independence Day Parade and Wild West Shoot-Out An old-fashioned parade with old cars, silly costumes, fire trucks, and political candidates wanders through downtown Saratoga. The chamber of commerce sponsors the event which begins at 11 am. At high noon, enjoy a short melodrama performed by local characters. Saloon girls, villains, heroes and gunshots (blanks) are everywhere! Fun for the entire family! July 4-6, 2008 18th Annual Platte Valley Festival of the Arts Sponsored by the Platte Valley Arts Council, this arts festival features the talents of the region's top artists and crafters in a juried art show and invitational craft show. Activities also include various musical performances, cowboy poetry and storytelling, a barbecue, Artist Quick Draw and auction, "Wild West Shoot-out", a Children's Art Show, and a general all-around good time. Always held the first full weekend in July. For more information CLICK HERE July 5-6, 2008 Platte River Poker Run & River Parade (3rd Annual) July 19-20, 2008 Grand Encampment Cowboy Gathering/Living History Days (6th Annual) Held in Encampment, Wyoming on the third full weekend in July. Families of all ages can come and enjoy this historical weekend. Team Roping held at the Lions Club Arena, Stick Horse Races, gunfighter shootouts, melodrama, museum living History Reenactment, Company 1 Camp, Calamity Jane and a Cowboy Jam sessions of Poetry and Music featuring artists from the region. Pancake breakfast served on Sunday morning. July 25-26, 2008 11th Annual Platte River Rodeo Association Rodeo A great two-day amateur rodeo featuring your favorite events: barrel racing, bronc riding, team roping, steer wrestling and of course, bull riding, Activities for the kids include mutton bustin' and steer riding. July 25-27, 2008 Sierra Madre Muzzleloaders Mountain Man Rendezvous and Black Powder Shoot Located on the Encampment Museum grounds, local black powder enthusiasts recreate the days of the Mountain Men with primitive camping, authentic costuming, traders row, and black powder shoots and tomahawk throws. August 9, 2008 Saratoga Fun Fest The ducks have run amuck! A full Saturday of activities include Crazy Daze bargains from downtown merchants, the infamous Rubber Duck Races down the Hugus-Mullison irrigation ditch, the Platte Valley Knights Car Show, carnival events such as face painting and a dunk tank, plus the 5K fun walk/run known as the Toga Trot. August 9, 2008 Street Dance and Concert This free open air concert in the heart of downtown Saratoga is sure to get your heart pumping. The featured artist will be announced soon. Enjoy the sounds of various artists such as Janie Fricke, John Conlee, Bobby Bare, Gene Watson and Annie & Amy, and Juice Newton. Bring your lawn chairs, your family and make a great evening of it! August 16, 2008 13th Annual Official State Microbrewery Competion Steinley Cup “Taste of the West” and 8th Annual Saratoga Bullfest Held on the 3rd full weekend of August. These events are held on Veterans Island in Saratoga and at Buck Springs outside town. The microbrewery competition brings together the top professional microbreweries in Wyoming in search of the coveted Saratoga Steinley Cup and is Wyoming’s official state microbrewery competition. Live music by Jimmy and the Boys, and great eats complete the event. The “Taste of the West” chili cook-off features the best in area cooks showcasing their specialties. Make a weekend of it, with the Saratoga Bullfest, a bull riders only event at Buck Springs Rodeo Arena. Calcutta betting on Friday and the Bullfest on Saturday night. Sponsored in part by the Encampment Chug 'n Tug tractor club, this event is held the weekend after Labor Day. October 31, 2008 Halloween Walk Held in downtown Saratoga, kids can trick-or-treat at the local retail shop. It’s convenient and safe for everyone!. November 1-5, 2008 Festival of the Trees and auction - Local organizations and businesses decorate artificial trees, wreaths and gift baskets that you will be able to take home and enjoy the entire season. Reverse Drawing tickets (if your ticket is drawn LAST--you win the $1000 shopping spree!) are on sale all month. The "giving tree" is for those who willingly share with others and captures the true meaning of Christmas. December 6, 2008 Christmas Parade and Winter Wonderland Enjoy the spirit of the season with a parade on December 6th0., showcasing floats entered by area clubs and businesses--all decorated and lit for the evening and held in historic downtown Saratoga. Santa and Mrs. Claus visit children of all ages at Platte Valley Community Center for the Valley Service Organization’s "Winter Wonderland". |
